I will be playing a show (flying solo) with White Rainbow on Aug. 1st, 2010 at The Knife Room in Kelly’s Olympian in beautiful downtown Portland. Starts around 9pm. Come if you can!

So I was putting our daughter to bed, and the muse spoke to me about an arrangement for one of Sean’s new songs that we played last year at the TBA show

I imagine a bunch of violins and bowed double basses, like 40. For the verse they are played mostly drone, but heavy on the vibrato and harmonics, maybe 2 or 3 parts. It would pick up a little for the chorus, melodic, but not lush (think John Cale rather than Spiritualized).

The ending could go in a couple of directions- either ascending pitch a la Day in the Life or Ligetti (not positive about that reference)..

…. or it could go all atonal/microtonal, still very drone, but more intense- distorted & harmonic.

Jimmy’s awesome drumming keeps everything moving.

Just an idea, might be mush in practice.

Jarvik VII- Plastic Hearts Can’t Be Broken (they Just Melt)

The Jarvik vii was a free jazz ensemble inspired by the Art Ensemble of Chicago. There was a revolving door of participants, but it was primarily Sean (Bugskull), Sam Coomes (Quasi), Aaron (Sone) and Brendan (bugskull). Guests included Travis Kurtz & Tres Shannon (Kurtz Project) and on one occasion, we were joined by Gino Robair (Splatter Trio) which was an unexpected surprise.

Many joyous sunday afternoons were spent skronking away at the bugskull house, and a good deal of it was captured on tape. Judicious editing provide some decent moments here.

Roadcone records released a series of Split 7″ singles. This one featured California (Aaron from Sone) and Capital Eye (Sean from Bugskull)- though in my mind there is no difference between this and bugskull. It’s a great track!

Here’s a gem.. Bugskull were never the most “precise” live unit, but man there were some moments of intensity/hilarity/absurdity. Highlights of this tape include:

a blistering Almost Blue with a (criminally) rare appearance of Jimmy on violin.

an indulgent Stiff as a board with the immortal lines: ” wondering where I am, in a foreign land. wondering how the hell I got here I rode in a van”

2 never released tracks: “What I had in mind” and “Krush Groov(ie)” featuring our neighbor Greg on Tuba (awesome!) .. the list goes on.
